Characteristic's of GREAT Teams

In today’s game of basketball, we hear a lot about teams that are GREAT or a very good basketball team. When you think of a great team, what are the characteristics you think of? Our Train To Perform team composed a list of all the characteristics of what we believe great teams do. Below is our list. GREAT TEAMS…

  • Compete Day in and Day out. Practice or game it does not matter

  • Check their ego’s at the door

  • Have LEADERSHIP

  • Are Tough – mentally, physically, can handle/push through adversity

  • Are Scrappy

  • Have players that UNDERSTAND their role and EXCEL at their role

  • Have high and outstanding communication

  • Are composed with players that all have the same goal/mission/vision

  • Hold One Another ACCOUNTABLE

  • Have Gym Rats and Becomes Contagious

  • Make ZERO EXCUSES!

  • Have POSITIVITY

  • Practice with Purpose, Energy, High Communication, Focus, and At High Level

  • Respect all opponents and do not take any one opponent lightly.

  • Dictate the pace of the game

  • Win the Rebounding War

  • Win 50/50 balls

  • Execute Plays and Game-Plan  

  • Have Great Spacing

  • Make Hard and Purposeful Cuts

  • Have Several Team Huddles in Practice and Games

  • Get Paint Touches

  • Get 2nd Chance Points

  • Understand Importance of Sprinting the Floor, Wings and Bigs

  • Take Care of the Ball

  • Dig in on defense until they get the ball or the buzzer sounds. They NEVER give in because they’re “tired”

  • Listen to their coach – they understand that he/she is looking out for their best interests!

  • Close out games and know how to play with a lead.

  • Understand the importance of ball reversal. 3 or more sides = higher % in scoring
